The UNC Charlotte Solar Decathlon competition house, UrbanEden, will depart campus on Friday, September 13. The house is comprised of four modules, or pods, which will be transported to California by Medallion Transport & Logistics. The house will arrive in Irvine, CA, on September 21.
Prior to the shipping date, the UrbanEden team will deconstruct the house, disassembling the photovoltaic panel racks and steel beams and columns with a small crane, removing the deck modules, and organizing and packing the tools and other materials needed for reconstruction.
On the shipping day, September 12, two large forklifts (operated by Maxim Crane Company) will be used to place the four main house pods onto flatbed trucks. A total of five flatbed trailers will be used to ship the house: one for each pod and one for the steel, PV panels, and other large items.
Reconstruction of UrbanEden begins at 7 a.m. on Monday, September 23, and concludes at 7 am on Wednesday, October 2. The US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon takes place October 3-13.
