Chancellor Visits UrbanEden

The UrbanEden team was pleased to welcome Chancellor and Mrs. Philip Dubois to the open house on Friday, August 23. This event was the Chancellor's first visit to the house since construction began in March. The event was well attended by members of the media, the university community, and the general public. 

UrbanEden to be Featured on Quest

UNC-TV returned to campus on Friday, August 9, to complete filming for an upcoming program about the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013. UrbanEden will be featured along with three other teams/projects in the science/sustainability public television program, Quest. UNC-TV also plans independent coverage of UrbanEden on its North Carolina Now program.

UrbanEden Participates in STEM to STEAM Conference

UrbanEden participated on July 15 in the STEM to STEAM Innovations and Creativity conference at UNC Charlotte Center City. The conference invited local school teachers to explore ways to integrate the arts and science disciplines to encourage creativity among students in grades k-12. The US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon and the UrbanEden house represented an exemplary project that generates innovative design and engineering practices. 

Ingersoll-Rand Visits Site for a "Build Day"

UNC Charlotte’s Solar Decathlon team got a hand from Ingersoll-Rand employees on Wednesday, June 26. More than 20 engineers and executives from Ingersoll-Rand helped make decorative tiles that will be used in the raincatchment troughs of UrbanEden. They also toured the EPIC building, had lunch, and heard a brief presentation about the house and the geopolymer cement concrete that the house - and the tiles they poured - are made of.

Governor Congratulates UrbanEden

Governor Pat McCrory issued a congratulatory letter to the UNC Charlotte Solar Decathlon team on June 13 in recognition of the participation in the US Department of Energy 2013 Solar Decathlon. "I am proud that UNC Charlotte represents our state in the 2013 Solar Decathlon," the Governor wrote. His letter noted the experiential learning that the competition provides students and the broad range of partnerships that the UNC Charlotte team has cultivated in support of UrbanEden. This month is Solar Energy Month in North Carolina.

UrbanEden Team to Present at PCI Annual Meeting

Members of the UrbanEden team are attending the 2013 Georgia/Carolinas PCI Annual Membership Meeting at Hilton Head, SC June 13-16. On June 15, the team will present "UNC Charlotte Solar Decathlon Project, Precast Design Studio and Geopolymer Concrete Research," as part of the annual business meeting. Georgia/Carolinas PCI is a chapter of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute; Georgia/Carolinas PCI Executive Director Peter Finsen is a mentor to the UrbanEden team.

UrbanEden Participates in Science and Technology Expo

On April 21, 2013, the UrbanEden team participated in the UNC Charlotte Science and Technology Expo, a four-hour free public event featuring 50 science and technology activities and interactive presentations designed by the university’s science, technology and education faculty, as well as by a number of science-oriented community partners.  The Expo was the capstone of more than two weeks of university participation in the North Carolina Science Festival, with events that also included five free public sc

On May 2, UrbanEden was the topic of discussion for The Live Wire, a weekly live-streaming webcast produced by UNC Charlotte Broadcast Communications. UNC Charlotte Executive Director of Communications Stephen Ward interviewed the Director of Communications for the College of Arts + Architecture about the Solar Decathlon and the UrbanEden house.
